Theatre-goers due to attend a sold-out staging of the Hamilton musical in Dublin on Tuesday night were told of its cancellation just hours before curtain up. A social media note from the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre said the performance had been called off due to cast illness.

“We understand the inconvenience and disappointment this may cause, and we want to assure you that every effort was made to proceed with the performance as planned,” it said. “Unfortunately, this situation is unavoidable, and the decision to cancel has been made with great difficulty.”

The theatre apologised and said it would attempt to find an alternative performance that could be added to the schedule before the end of its run.

“Should we be able to do so we will inform you as soon as possible to allow for priority booking.”

It is unclear whether the illness affecting the cast will impact on other shows this week. A spokesperson for the theatre could not immediately be reached for comment.

The hugely successful production tells the story of America’s founding father Alexander Hamilton, who became George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War. It has received widespread praise for its score, which blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap and R&B. During its celebrated run it has scooped 11 Tony awards, seven Olivier awards and the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Those who missed out on Tuesday’s performance were given an automatic refund.
