Finders Keepers at 13 Michael Street is one the city’s much loved independent family run stores, selling homeware, art, candles, décor, lamps, lockers, pottery and much more from around the world.

Sadly, the owners announced on Wednesday that the shop will be winding up operations later this year. “I’ve always shared our story here with you, but I feel like I’ve just disappeared into the ether this year. My energy completely zapped,” said Lisa Connolly.

“Running a small business is like running an ultra-marathon. I embrace endurance sports, so I guess the nature of this suited my personality. But this year I have learned, the finish line I had been waiting to cross just isn’t coming, and I’m so drained I can’t keep running.

“After almost seven years we have decided to close Finders Keepers. Running a highly seasonal business with fixed costs was always challenging. We have done our best to adapt and change to meet all challenges faced over the years.

“But honestly, the challenges just keep on coming and I’m tired. I need to make the change now before I lose my spark completely. I know it’s a shame because there’s potential with our online business, but my passion has always been in the physical experience.

“I did consider upskilling in digital marketing to grow that side of our business, but I love the bricks and mortar shopping experience. We are not closing immediately. Our lease doesn’t come to an end until September, so hopefully we will get to see you all over the coming weeks.

Lisa Connolly paid tribute to all those who supported the enterprise

“There won’t be a big closing sale. We will continue to trade as we are and hopefully have some busy days ahead to help us honour our commitments to our wonderful suppliers.

“I would just like to say the huge amount of love and admiration I have for Beth, who has kept the show on the road when I stepped back. This is so hard for Beth too, and yet she has continued working like a pro.”

Ms Connolly added that like every good story, theirs had “an exciting beginning, a griping middle, and a happy ending.”

“We love the community that we have built through Finders Keepers and are so grateful for each and every connection made. I’m brimming with pride with what we achieved. I do think we made our mark.”

Messages of support have flooded into their social media pages. One customer wrote: “This actually brought tears to my eyes. The honesty of this is admirable. I hope whatever is next brings as much happiness as this one once did. Thank you for filling my house with the most amazing pieces.

“Finders Keepers will forever be a part of my home – from all the laughing animals, giant lamps, solar systems and dinosaurs I have a home full of your finds but my keeps. Thank you for the magic.”
