A campaign for a Lido on the Northside is hotting up once more.
Campaigners want to see the docklands transformed with a new outdoor pool.
The Lido would be housed in George’s Dock.
It was first mooted a couple of years ago, after plans to build a white water rafting facility there were shot down.
Proposals would see an outdoor pool, saunas, and green spaces in the now-barren George’s Dock.
Patrick Earles is from the Dublin City Lido Campaign, and explains the thinking behind it.
“Initially we thought that, you know, it would be a great idea to create something ambitious, and an outdoor swimming facility would be ideally suited to this site,” he said.
So we’ve been chipping away at this essentially for a few years now, and we’re trying to convince Dublin City Council and get them to see the value,” he added.
Due to planning restrictions, the site must be used for a water-based development.
We asked these Dubliners if they think it’s a good idea.
“Yeah, I do. I am hesitant saying that because any money spent towards something that’s seen as a luxury is then hard to justify in the face of all the other things we need,” one person said.
“I think it would work, because a lot of people that do the sea swimming, like my boyfriend, he does see swimming. I don’t like cold war, but I would like to do it, but I just don’t like cold war, so I think it would benefit and it would have to be spotless,” another said.
Campaigners are now hoping to raise funds for a new design for the space as well as completing a feasibility study.
