A fine all-round team performance secured victory for Seneschalstown in round one of the Kepak-sponsored LGFA SFC at Fr McManus Park, Skryne.

Seneschalstown had an opportunity to establish an early lead when they were awarded a penalty in the opening minute. Orla Finnegan took the spot-kick but the Skryne ’keeper managed to get a foot to it and deflect it out for a 45.

However, Finnegan made amends for that miss with a goal at the end of the opening quarter to go with points scored earlier by Kellie Stafford, Seanaidh Hickey and Ruth Commons.

The hosts had two points in that opening quarter but were rocked by a second Seneschalstown goal from Anna Wogan.

The lead extended to seven before Skryne enjoyed a spell of dominance during which they hit a goal and a point to reduce the deficit.

However, Wogan struck for her second goal close to half-time, leaving Seneschalstown leading by 3-5 to 1-5 at the break.

A promising start to the second half saw Skryne find the net again and they eventually reduced the deficit to two points. Seneschalstown responded to the challenge, though, and hit five successive points to again take control of proceedings.

A penalty miss proved costly for Skryne at that stage and their task was made all the more difficult when Donna Stafford struck for Seneschalstown’s fourth goal.

Hard as they tried there was no way back for Skryne at that stage and Seneschalstown went on to record a comfortable victory.

SENESCHALSTOWN: Louise Coyle; Leanne Clarke, Caragh Monaghan, Aoibhe Monaghan; Meadhbh Hickey, Orla Garry, Ruth Commons 0-2; Seanaidh Hickey 0-1, Tara Traynor; Kellie Stafford 0-6, Ruth Commons, Caoimhe Clarke; Donna Stafford 1-1, Orla Finnegan 1-0, Anna Wogan 2-1. Subs: Aly Finnegan for M Hickey, Tiana Kyle for Monaghan.
