That won’t be the case if the hoped-for reunion happens in Paris and former Munster and Ireland star Ryan makes it to Versailles to see Irish showjumper Sweetnam compete in his second Olympics.
When the boys met they liked to fight but then Ryan, who was two years younger than his cousin, started to grow into the man who became a provincial and Test level second row. “I used to beat the crap out of him when he was younger, then he grew a good bit,” smiled Sweetnam. “It stopped when he got tall – because I didn’t get that tall!”.
Ryan is Ronan O’Gara’s right-hand man in La Rochelle these days. He had intended to catch Sweetnam performing at a show last month but La Rochelle’s run through the Top 14 to the semi-finals ruled that out, though Ryan did see Sweetnam perform at the Dublin Horse Show last year. They topped the league standings heading into the five-star €1million Rolex Nations Cup in Aachen, the final top-level outing before Paris.
He left Ireland at 22, at a crossroads in his life, having realised he was not cut out for the IT course he took. A trip to America opened his eyes to the equestrian opportunities there, that he could make a good living.
