New League of Ireland champions Shelbourne have received more good news after securing a sports capital grant in the region of €500,000 for academy facilities in the AUL after lodging a successful appeal to an initial rejection.
It’s understood that a minor technical problem with the application is the reason that Shels missed out on the list of projects included in the €230m Community Sports Facilities Fund that was announced in September.
They launched an appeal that has been approved by the Department of Sport, thus meaning that Shels can now complete proposed works at their training base geared towards underage sides.
A number of other football projects have also been upgraded by the department, with the size of their grant increased because it has been recognised their project qualified for ‘regional’ rather than ‘local’ status which is a higher tier of payment.
This includes the Cork Women’s and Schoolgirls Soccer Centre at Casement Park which is operated by the Cork Womens and Schoolgirls Soccer League; their amount has jumped from €156,229 to an amount in the region of €390,000.
Portlaoise FC were due €159,081 for an astro pitch project and their return will now increase to around €400,000 while the Donegal-based Inishowen League are also significant beneficiaries with their appeal bringing the state funds for the refurbishment of a clubhouse from €184,492 to circa €460,000.
