RTÉ have selected Drogheda United’s visit to league leaders Shelbourne as their live TV offering on the penultimate Friday night of the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division season.
Shelbourne ended a five-game winless streak on Friday night with a 3-1 victory at home to Waterford, with victories elsewhere for Derry City, Shamrock Rovers and St Patrick’s Athletic leaving the destiny of the title race still very much in the balance.
Derry City and Shamrock Rovers remain two points behind the leaders with two rounds to play, after both picked up victories in Louth against Dundalk and Drogheda respectively.
Stephen Kenny’s resurgent Saints are a further two points back after a 2-1 win at home to Galway United, and will host Derry in what looks like a do-or-die battle on the same night that Shels host Drogheda next week.
A win for Shelbourne in front of the RTÉ cameras on Friday would leave them on the brink of a first title in 18 years, ahead of a final night visit to the Brandywell to face Derry.
Shamrock Rovers will play their second-to-last league game of the season away to already-relegated Dundalk on Sunday 27 October, due to the Hoops’ Europa Conference League visit to Belfast to face Larne on the preceding Thursday.
By the time of RTÉ’s live game on Friday night, Drogheda could already be consigned to the relegation play-off against one of the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division sides.
Victory for Bohemians away at Sligo Rovers this evening would confirm a ninth-place finish for Kevin Doherty’s side, who also have the Sports Direct Men’s FAI Cup final against Derry City to look forward to on 10 November.
