Shillelagh-Coolboy 4-8 Rathnew 1-12

Shillelagh/Coolboy’s Ciarán Lambert is challenged by Rathnew’s Charlie Mernagh.

Andy O’Brien’s Shillelagh-Coolboy brought their fine Division 2 league form into the opening round of the Fitzgerald Kitchens Junior ‘A’ football championship when escaping from Pearse’s Park with a 4-8 to 1-12 win over 14-man Rathnew on Sunday afternoon.

In beautiful sunshine, the Shillelagh-Coolboy men were staring down the barrel of a gun when Rathnew’s Stewart Murphy fired home from the penalty spot and corner-forward Seán O’Connor followed up with a free to leave the Village side leading by 1-11 to 2-5, Patrick Keogh, Ross O’Connor and Robert Byrne making life very difficult for the Shillelagh-Coolboy attack for the most part.
