On Friday (June 14), USA will take on Ireland in the Florida leg of Group A in the T20 World Cup 2024 edition. So far, Florida has hosted only one game in the ongoing 20-nation tournament, being held in West Indies and the USA. It was a washout encounter between Group D’s Sri Lanka and Nepal, where not even the coin toss was possible. The weather forecast isn’t encouraging for the remaining three games, however, if the USA-Ireland clash is washed out, it will confirm the team who will be enter the Super 8 along with India from Group A.
From Group A, India have secured a place in the next round with three successive wins whereas Canada are also out (who may reach four points — with a win over India — but have a very poor Net Run-Rate). USA, with 3 points, are a strong contender to enter the next round and even a washout against Ireland will secure them a spot.
If the match is abandoned due to rain, USA will end with 5 points from four games. Ireland will have 1 point with a game to go, versus Pakistan (also in Florida on Sunday). The winner of the Ireland-Pakistan clash will end with 3 or 4 points, respectively. Hence, USA will step into the next round even with a washout against the Irish camp on Friday.
WILL IT BE USA ALONG WITH INDIA?
USA have stunned one and all with their performance in the ongoing showpiece event. While they opened their campaign with a good win over Canada, they pulled off a shocking victory over Babar Azam & Co. Even against India, they had their moments before losing by seven wickets in New York. Hence, even a washout versus Ireland will help their cause.
Meanwhile, Ireland and Pakistan’s campaigns will come to an end if rain plays spoilsport in Florida on Friday.
