There is tension within the coalition this evening after details of the sports capital grants were announced early by some in Fianna Fáil.

The grants, which invest millions in sports clubs across the country, were expected to be kept under wraps until after 11am tomorrow.

However, Dublin Fianna Fáil TD Jim O’Callaghan was among those who posted details on social media of funding for sports clubs in his constituency.

The Dublin Bay South TD was pictured beside Minister of State for Sport Thomas Byrne when revealing the funding.

Senior figures in Fine Gael are said to be furious this evening that Fianna Fáil councillors and many election candidates allegedly got an early breakdown of the grants.

The controversy comes amid mounting indications that many Government TDs are actively planning for a November general election.
