The city you can fly to from Cardiff for half the price of a London train ticket

The cheapest flight you can get from Cardiff right now is the magical city of Dublin. And the best bit? It’s so cheap, it costs less than the average return ticket to London from the Welsh capital. If you’ve never been to Dublin it’s definitely a bucket list city to visit with an incredible atmosphere – making it a true cultural gem.

But even if you have been before, Dublin always has something new going on. Whether it’s an exhibition, show, concert or an event that’s completely different, the world-renowned city has truly got something for everyone, so it’s only a bonus that you can get there without spending hundreds of pounds on travel.

If you fly out from Cardiff Airport on Friday, September 20 for a long weekend and head back on Monday, September 23, you can get there and back for as little as £41.48 with Ryanair, which is cheaper than most return train journey to London from the Welsh capital. At the time of writing, most return train tickets to London cost £98.80 without a railcard, and while it might not be much warmer than Wales, what it lacks for in September heat Dublin definitely makes up for in character. While you’re there, you could pay a visit to Dublin’s iconic cultural quarter where you’ll find shops, pubs and restaurants in every direction. During the day the narrow cobbled streets are buzzing with street performers and buskers, then when it gets dark, you can truly make the most of the booming nightlife.

And of course, you can’t miss the iconic Guinness Factory, where you can discover how Ireland’s most famous export is made. The storehouse, which was originally built in 1904, comprises seven floors. The final stop on the tour is the gravity bar where you can enjoy a complimentary pint of Guinness while enjoying panoramic views of the city.

Some of the more traditional, must-see destinations, according to Lonely Planet, also include the likes of these spots. We’ve included their locations to make it super easy if you are planning a trip and want to cover it all:

  • Kilmainham Gaol: This former prison is located at Inchicore Rd, Kilmainham, Dublin 8, D08 RK28

  • National Gallery: Definitely a must-see for any arty types, the gallery is at Merrion Square W, Dublin 2, D02 K303

  • St Patrick’s Cathedral: This Roman Catholic cathedral can be found at St Patrick’s Close, Dublin, D08 H6X3

  • Phoenix Park: The park described as the place “Dublin comes to breathe”, and is at Whitefields, Phoenix Park., Dublin, D08 KDC4

  • Museum of Natural History: This has got to be one of the best places in Ireland to soak up everything from archaeology and decorative arts, to natural history, which you can find at Merrion St Upper, Dublin 2, D02 F627

  • Christ Church Cathedral: This iconic spot is the elder of the capital city’s two medieval cathedrals, after St Patrick’s, so definitely worth adding to your itinerary if you are keen to tick them all off. You can find it at Christchurch Pl, Wood Quay, Dublin, D08 TF98.
