Wanted posters. They are something we might normally associate with a 50’s western movie, or an American cop show, but not something we are used to seeing on our own shores.
But this week, An Garda Síochána have made an unprecedented move by releasing nearly 100 images to the public, to try and identify those suspected of committing crimes during the Dublin Riots.
Senior gardaí said that they are asking the public’s help to name the men and women in the footage, while they have also asked any person featured in the images to come forward and speak with them.
“It may be the case that after meeting with you we can eliminate some from inquiries or progress the investigation in relation to your participation,” Chief Superintendent Patrick McMenamin said addressing the people in the footage released.
The images released have already helped to identify multiple suspects, but it hasn’t come without controversy, with many questioning the morality and legality of such a bold move.
Today on The Indo Daily, Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Robin Schiller Senior Journalist with The Irish Independent and Carlo Salizzo, Partner In The Technology And Innovation Group At Matheson LLP solicitors to discuss this unprecedented decision by An Garda Síochána. Does it set a worrying precedent for Irish policing, or was it indeed justified?
