The beach is set within a steep-sided cove with striking red sandstone cliffs and folds seen on the surrounding cliffs.

The designated bathing area is 100 metres long and 75 metres wide at low tide and activities such as swimming, bodyboarding and kayaking are possible.

The beach is a lifeguard zone during bathing season to ensure the safety of those swimming at the beach.

STUNNING BEACH

The beach is the perfect place for a summer‘s day out, and the cliffs support a variety of seabirds, including kittiwakes.

There is a grassy area above the beach and cove perfect for picnicking and bird watching.

Visitors can also snorkel at the beach but all people travelling to Counsellors’ Strand are warned to be wary of the tide as high tide covers the beach.

People planning to swim at the beach are advised to take note of tide times and not to swim if unsure.

There are toilets as well as a terraced bar at Counsellors’ Strand that overlooks the beach for those who want to take in the breathtaking views.

It is not wheelchair accessible as the beach is only accessed via a steep slipway.

The beach, also known as Lawlor’s Beach, is a popular spot for locals when the sun is out and during the summer holidays.

BREATHTAKING VIEWS

The Dunmore East cliff walk is a well-known spot for locals and a hidden gem for travellers.

The walk begins at the back of the Old Convent in Dunmore East village and offers breathtaking views of Hook Head and the famous Hook Lighthouse.

The full walk is 7km and it is considered a moderate trail with a full walking time of two hours to two hours and 30 minutes.

Locals advise setting out for the trail at dawn during high tide for the most breathtaking views of the coves and cliffs.

Hikers can even rest at Portally Cove to the west of Dunmore East village to listen to the waves crashing at the rocks.

The hike is also dog-friendly.

Dunmore East is a perfect holiday spot for those looking to enjoy the spoils of country coastal living while remaining near one of Ireland’s biggest cities.
