Tom Doherty: Golfing for Ireland in the Euros

A former Mayor of Killarney has been selected on the European Team Championships for the Golfers with a Disability Championships.

Tom Doherty, who was a Fianna Fail representative on Killarney Town Council for a number of years, will fly the green, white and gold flag in Germany next month.

The competition takes place in Hosel Golf Club, Düsseldorf from 18-20 July

Ireland captain Paul Kelly, from Armagh, selected the co the team after trials at Carton House and the completion of the ISPS Handa Irish open for golfers with a disability in Roganstown.

Joining Tom will be Ian St John from Tramore), Cian Arthurs from Roganstown and Dianne Conway from Shandon Park.

“I was delighted to take the phone call from Paul with the news that l made the team. It’s a great honour to represent my club and country at such a prestigious event,” Tom said.

The team will have two preparation days coming up in Carton House where Golf lreland’s headquarters is also based.

Tom said he is looking forward to the challenge in Germany where Ireland will play different formats over three days, foursomes, greensomes and a fourball on the third day.
