Stuart Grehan shot a closing 69 to end the week in a tie for seventh at the Clutch Pro Tour event at Oxford’s Frilford Heath Golf Club.
The Tullamore pro had opened with a one-under 71, but improved by two in the second and third rounds as he overtook Niall Kearney and Rowan Lester, the only two other Irishmen to make the 36-hole cut.
Back-to-back birdies was the ideal start to Grehan’s final round, but starting the final round five back, his hopes of scything through the field for victory were cut short with a double bogey on the third.
Three more birdies in succession from six through eight saw him turn at -3 for the day, and he played the back nine in level par with just one birdie and one bogey to take home a £1,450 paycheck.
Lester began the round two ahead of Grehan and just three back after rounds of 68 and 70, but three bogeys from the eighth to the 14th proved costly and he’d end up signing for a two-over 74 and a T24 finish.
Kearney had matched Lester’s opening 68, but slipped back into the pack with a second-round 73, but he got back the right side of par for his third round, closing out with a one-under 71 to get back on level terms with Lester in joint 24th.
Englishman Angus Flanagan shot a final-round 67 to take the victory and first place cheque for £8,000.
