Gardaí said traffic heading for Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh’s Wake tomorrow (Friday) will be diverted off the main road before coming into Dingle town.

Sgt James Hurley told The Kerryman that parking has been made available on land near Greenmount House Bed and Breakfast, a very short walk from O’Connor’s Funeral Home in Dingle, where the legendary Gaelic Games commentator will be Waked from 11am to 8pm on Friday, June 28. His remains are due to return to Kerry this evening, Thursday, having left his resident County Meath earlier today.

Funeral-goers travelling towards Dingle on the N86 will be diverted at the end of the Lios Póil straight onto the L12078, to take what’s commonly referred to locally as the ‘high road’ into Dingle. All other traffic can continue on the main N86 route into Dingle, as normal.

Sgt Hurley has assured those who’re unfamiliar with the locality that the route will be well-marshalled for those coming to and leaving from the Funeral. Personnel will also be in place for those who need help crossing the road, and disabled parking will be available at the former garage forecourt next to O’Connor’s Funeral Home.

“Everyone is putting the shoulder to the wheel back there, and it will be well managed,” Sgt Hurley said.

The Wake and Funeral are expected to be among the busiest, if not the busiest outright, seen in Dingle. Mr Ó Muircheartaigh will be laid to rest at Milltown Cemetery outside the town following 11am Mass at St Mary’s Church, Green Street, Dingle, on Saturday, June 29.
