The man has been named locally as George Belton (61) who is a native College Park in Longford.
A man killed in a workplace accident in Co Longford on Thursday night has named locally.
The man, who is in his 60s, was working on a closed section of the N55 Athlone road in Ballymahon leading into the town when he was struck by a works vehicle just after 7pm on Thursday night.
The planned overnight roadworks on the road had just got underway when the tragedy struck.
Weather conditions were said to be very poor at the time.
The man has been named locally as George Belton (61) who is a native College Park in Longford.
Mr Belton was pronounced dead at the scene and the area has been preserved for a technical examination.
Paying tribute local Councillor Seamus Butler (FF) said ‘’I have just received the tragic news that George Belton of College Park has been killed in an accident in the Ballymahon Town area during roadworks.
“All our sympathies go to Pauline and the family at this sad time for the Belton Family. May he rest in Peace’’.
Both the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and the local coroner have been informed of the incident.
The HSA will conduct an investigation into the accident.
The Athlone Road entering the town is currently closed at the Centra store and Maxol Service station and is expected to remain so overnight.
The Centra store also closed at the time to facilitate the road closure.
A Garda spokesperson outlined, “Gardaí are investigating the circumstances of a fatal workplace incident in Ballymahon, Co. Longford, on Thursday, May 16, 2024.
“Shortly after 7:30 pm, Gardaí and Emergency Services were alerted after a male in his 60s, who was working on a closed section of Athlone Road, Ballymahon, was struck by a works vehicle.
“He was pronounced deceased at the scene. “The area is preserved for examination, and the HSA and local Coroner have been notified.”
