The UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School has launched its 17th annual awards, that recognise the critical role that business journalists play in helping society understand complex financial issues.

The awards are sponsored by Bank of Ireland and will be decided by an independent jury drawn from academia, industry and the media. This year’s jury will be chaired by Nóirín O’Sullivan, the former garda commissioner.

‘Journalism is a core component in any healthy business community, economy, or society’

The awards, run in association with the Business Journalist Association of Ireland (BJAI), celebrate excellence in Irish business journalism in all platforms.

Prizes will be awarded in seven categories including Business News Story of the Year, Upcoming Journalist of the Year and Business Interview of the Year.

Speaking at the launch, Damien Garvey, head of group external communications at Bank of Ireland, said: “We are proud to sponsor the UCD Smurfit School Business Journalist Awards.

“Journalism is a core component in any healthy business community, economy, or society – and that should be recognised. Through these awards, we look forward to highlighting excellence in business journalism.”

Professor Federica Pazzaglia, director of UCD Smurfit School and associate dean of UCD College of Business said: “As Ireland’s premier business school, we are committed to co-creating a vibrant environment with our business students, academics and corporate stakeholders that is conducive to the creation and exchange of new knowledge and ideas with a positive impact on business and society.”
