AN urgent warning has been issued to Irish holidaymakers as “significantly high temperatures” are expected in Spain over the coming days.
The Spanish Meteorology Agency AEMET has said excessive heat is on the cards.
They said: “There will be significantly high temperatures in large areas of the southern and northeastern half of the peninsula, inland Mallorca, and the south of the central Canary Islands.
“Temperatures will tend to rise in most of the country.
“Temperatures are expected to exceed 35C in the southern and north-eastern half of the peninsula, inland Mallorca and the south of the central Canary Islands, and even 38C to 40C in areas of Andalusia, Murcia, the south of the Valencian Community, Albacete and depressions in the north-east.”
Orange warnings are in place for a number of holiday hotspots – with tomorrow set to be the hottest day of the heatwave.
The second highest warning has been issued for Seville, Andalusia and Valencia for today and tomorrow.
The Canary Islands and a number of other areas in the south and east of the peninsula are currently under a yellow warning.
Back in Ireland, it’s set to be a dry weekend with mercury hitting 20C on Sunday.
A forecaster said: “Dry for many over the weekend, though there will be scattered showers at times.
“Temperatures recovering slightly, though remaining just below average.”
Friday will be a mixed day with heavy rain and sunshine on the cards.
Met Eireann said: “Tomorrow will be a cloudier day overall with the best of any sunny spells in the east and southeast.
“Dry for many but scattered showers will slowly spread from the northwest through the morning and afternoon.
“Some patchy drizzle will push into northwestern coasts later.
“Highest temperatures of 14 to 18C in a light northerly breeze.
“A cloudy start to Saturday with scattered showers.
“Sunny spells will develop through the day with further scattered showers developing also.
“Highest temperatures of 15 to 19C in a light northerly or variable breeze.
“Mainly dry with clear spells and just isolated showers. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11C in light variable winds.
“A dry start for many with sunny spells on Sunday.
“Scattered showers will develop through the morning and afternoon. Turning cloudier in the south and west later.
“Highest temperatures of 16 to 20C in light to moderate southerly or variable winds.”
